Michael Reed's Masks - Bahama Style

5/2/2015

I play for FGCU D2, so I wanted something that fit the theme of FL that would be different, simple, and cool. I did the white helmet with the Miami Vice palm trees and Oakley style shades with the pearl chrome orange lenses my first year here. This past season I wanted to keep the shades as my signature thing, but change up the scheme a bit. So I came up with a retro version doing the background as a classic Tommy Bahama style print with palm trees and flamingos pattern with a pair of wayfarer Ray Bans on top. Both helmets definitely get lots of comments.

For next season I'm having my local painter (who did these two) do another mask that includes a little homage to my Whiskey brand I recently launched. It will be desert digital camo with army black tactical goggles on top and American Barrels logo and bottle crop on the back. It should turn out sick! Plus we're doing a special Wounded Warrior game next season with some digital jerseys so it'll be a good set up.

Thanks again,

Michael

Johnny Scholl's Custom Sportmask T3

Hey, my name is Johnny Scholl (@scholli41 on instagram),

I am 20 years and playing goalie is my passion. I do not earn my money with it, but it is more than just a free time activity. The whole week I look forward to the next ice time. Just to make the big saves. To help my team to win. Even when I am not standing on the ice, I work hardly for hockey. I go to gym whenever I can to improve my speed, strength and condition.

My mask is really important to me. I play a sportmask T3. The design is really simple. Since I am a kid I am an huge fan of my hometown team from Germany, the Cologne Sharks (Kölner Haie). In 2013 they gave me the chance to work for them. I learned a lot about the things behind the scenes. They taught me what it means to work for a professional hockey organization. It was an once-in-a-lifetime-experience. Therefore I decided to go with the Cologne Sharks logo on both sides of my mask. In the background of the logo you can see the Cologne Cathedral, the most famous sight in Cologne.

At the chin of my mask my last name is written. I choosed a gothic lettering due to the fact that I liked the look of Cam Ward's lettering on his mask.

The most personal thing is on the backplate of my mask. It shows a scene from The Lion's King when Simba and his father are sitting together and look down on their kingdom. It is very personal to me because it is kind of a tribute to my father who passed away when I was six years old. I had and still have a lot of questions to ask, but I do not have the chance anymore - just like Simba. But I also will also listen to my heart when I have to - also just like Simba.

Thank you for reading and I hope you enjoyed the story of my mask.

Sincerly yours,

Johnny

Dion Griarte's Steam Whistle Mask

Dion Griarte's Steam Whistle-themed mask painted by Rob Taylor.
Hi guys,

My name is Dion Griarte from Mississauga, Ontario, Canada.
Playing with a white mask was supper boring and lame! I found it way too difficult to decide what I want painted on my mask. After sipping on a few of my favourite Canadian beer, I quickly decided to paint my mask in tribute to my favourite beer Steam whistle! Why!? Because I play beer league hockey. Beer league hockey + beer mask = unbeerlievable!
I quicky called my friends down at steam whistle and they hooked me up with Rob Taylor who paints their retro vehicles. He painted it by hand. He is a very talented guy from Niagara falls, ON and is also diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. Which makes this piece of art so much more meaningful with an outcome like this.

Thanks for taking interest!

Dave Murray's Refurbished Itech 960

Here's a look at Dave's 20-year-old Itech 960. Incredible.
This is my 20 year old Itech 960, which I used as my sole goalie mask until last year. After having it sit on the shelf for a while, I decided to look into having it refurbished and repainted. The folks at OTNY Mask were more than happy to help out - they painted my Shark 933 (and also gave it an amazing 24k gold-plated cage), so I knew they would do a good job - but this exceeded my expectations in every way.

I designed the paint scheme myself, to match my team's new jerseys (which, hilariously enough, I also designed). The angle along the jawline also matches the design on my new Brian's Gnetik Pro 2 setup.

Most importantly, though, is the orange ribbon on the back. My mom (as well as my aunt, and my late grandmother) has Multiple Sclerosis. She has to try extra hard every single day to accomplish even the simplest tasks and movement, so the ribbon is a tribute to her, but also a reminder to me to never give up hope.
